QUEEN ANNE HILL HOME

When Landon new-modeled a view home, on the west side of Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, overlooking Puget Sound, he dramatically changed how spaces relate to each other and the view.  The stairs down to the lower levels was moved from out of the kitchen to its new location alongside the entry stairs, which opened up the entry.  A 12'-long skylight well between the dining and the living areas subtly divides the room into "zones" and, as a bonus, offers views of the Olympics from the entry--through the roof!

The owner's prized Chihuly glasswork sits in a place of honor, lit from above, and can be enjoyed from in the kitchen, as well.  A raised platform at the end of the kitchen allows the owners to enjoy their view while eating breakfast.

Final piece of advice: Even if 5 different design professionals have told you that "there's no other way," do not override your instincts with rationalities.  Trust your instincts.  Keep talking to designers until you find one that has the product knowledge and the expertise to accept limits and turn them into assets.  I believe it was Stravinsky who said, "When I am confronted by the vast infinitude of possibilities that music affords me, I am overwhelmed with despair, but give me limits and I can rise to the heights."  Whether he said it quite that way or not, he would certainly have agreed with it!
