The home's original kitchen had an overly large island, turned 90-degrees from where the new one is. It extended so close to the family room that it impeded traffic. The new hospitality center was a walled off pantry. The overall effect made the kitchen feel like an awkward appendage off the family room and breakfast nook. It was the stubby leg off a long 'T.'

The new plan unites the rooms by removing the walls around the pantry and replacing shelving with cupboards. A Landon-designed painted furniture piece transitions the island from the functional activities of the kitchen to the more "sit and chat or watch TV" focus of the family room. The kitchen now connects to the feeling of their home and welcomes family and guests to gather.

Counters in honed granite, engineered stone, and end-grain walnut make for easy maintenance. Walls are fully-tiled in the main kitchen area with Jeffrey Court tile and random one-inch "drops."

Landon's background in cabinet-making made this kitchen possible. Every cabinet was hand-built and "lofted" off full-scale drawings. A Landon-designed walnut armoire actually holds the Sub Zero 600 series all-refrigerator -- which is not designed to be concealed! Another walnut armoire sits by the butler's door to the dining room and holds china and serving pieces. The kitchen blends these walnut elements with the glazed cherry cabinets that predominate.
